Former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin Joins Accelify’s California Board of Advisors

August 30, 2010

Accelify is proud to announce that former state Superintendent of Public Instruction, Delaine Eastin, has joined Accelify’s California Board of Advisors as part of the effort to help school districts tap into Medi-Cal reimbursement revenue.

& #x0A; Eastin joins former Assembly Member Marilyn Brewer, former California Education Secretary and Assemblywoman Kerry Mazzoni, former Senator Dede Alpert, and former Indiana Attorney General Jeff Modisett on the Board of Advisors.

“We are extremely honored that Delaine Eastin has joined our California Board of Advisors,” said Alex Brecher, COO of Accelify. “Delaine’s extensive experience with California’s education system will be invaluable to us as we continue to advise our school districts on industry developments and business strategies as they relate to the complexities of Medicaid/Medi-Cal claiming.”

Elected in 1994, Delaine Eastin served two terms as State Superintendent of Public Instruction in California. The state superintendent is a nonpartisan state constitutional office and Eastin was the highest-ranking official in California’s elementary and secondary public school system, and the first and only woman to be elected to this office. In this role, she spearheaded major efforts to improve reading, writing, science, social sciences, the arts, and mathematics instruction; reduce class sizes in kindergarten through third grade; and implement statewide standards, assessments, and a system of accountability. Eastin also advocated for safe and healthy school environments, up-to-date facilities, twenty-first century technology, family-school partnerships, expanded teacher training and professional development, higher graduation requirements, including the arts in the core curriculum and increased resources for schools.

She also advocated strongly for strengthening school nutrition, and she enlisted California as the first state in the nation to embrace the Team Nutrition program to improve the nutritional value of school lunches. She has also carried out a campaign to bring the arts back into schools at all levels, and was an enthusiastic supporter of civic engagement and community service for students.

Prior to her election as State Superintendent, Eastin served four terms in the State Assembly beginning in November 1986, and was chair of the Assembly Committee on Education. Before this, Eastin was elected twice to the Union City Council. While serving on the City Council, Delaine worked in the private sector as a corporate planner and accounting manager, gaining valuable skills that supported her efforts to modernize the California Department of Education. Eastin’s past experience also includes her time as a college professor at DeAnza and Canada Community Colleges.

Accelify’s California Board of Advisors plays an important role in helping the company stay at the forefront of educational and Medi-Cal related issues in the state. The members’ diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise provide insight and guidance on legal matters, state and federal Medi-Cal guidelines, school administration, the political climate, and other issues that affect California districts. The board’s insight is especially valuable in these times of increasing budgetary constraints, and Accelify is committed to providing the highest level of service in order to help school districts and local education agencies simplify the claiming process and receive their full shares of Medi-Cal reimbursement revenues.

Accelify is currently working with a number of districts in California including Sweetwater Union High School District, the largest high school district in the country, Green Dot Public Schools, and Travis Unified School District. In just its first quarter, Accelify has increased Sweetwater’s participation by more than 25%, ensured more than 90% participation in Green Dot, and achieved 100% participation for Travis.

With state and local funding in crisis, the onus is on school districts to make budgets work. Despite this, the Medi-Cal program remains a widely untapped funding source, and many districts are claiming just 1/3 to 1/2 of their available reimbursements. As the recently passed national health care legislation is expected to increase the number of Medicaid/Medi-Cal-eligible students by about 27%, this is an ideal time for districts to explore new ways to maximize their programs, and increase their reimbursement revenue.
