Former Education Secretary and Assemblywoman Kerry Mazzoni Joins Accelify’s California Board of Advisors
August 6, 2010
Accelify is proud to announce that former California education secretary and former assemblywoman, Kerry Mazzoni, who represented Marin County and part of Sonoma County, has joined Accelify’s California Board of Advisors.
Mazzoni knows how to take on an issue at the local, state and national level and win. She has spent most of her adult life fighting for high quality public schools in California and she knows that good schools are the center of healthy and safe communities. She joins former Assembly Member Marilyn Brewer and former Indiana Attorney General Jeff Modisett on the Board of Advisors.
“We are extremely pleased and honored that Kerry Mazzoni has agreed to join Accelify’s Calif ornia Board of Advisors,” said Alex Brecher, COO of Accelify. “She brings over 20 years’ experience in education and business to Accelify. Kerry is a successful education strategist who knows how to help educators though tough times. We’re confident that her experience and insight will help guide our efforts to help the education community manage the complexities of Medi-Cal reimbursement claiming.”
Mazzoni was Governor Gray Davis’ education secretary and has served on the Board of Trustees of Novato School District, where she was twice president of the board. She graduated from Novato High School and the University of California, Davis with a bachelor of science in child development. She has served her community for over 30 years in both the non-profit sector and in elected office. Elected to the California State Assembly in 1994, she served until 2000. While in the Assembly Mazzoni chaired the Assembly Education Committee for four years, and during her time in the legislature she served as chair of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus and as chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures Education Committee.
Mazzoni has served as a member of the board of directors for numerous local non-profit organizations including the Conservation Corps North Bay (formerly the Marin Conservation Corps) where she served as President during its recent expansion to Sonoma County; California Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA); the Marin Dance Theater; the Marin Education Fund; the Novato Human Needs Center; and the Novato Youth Center. Mazzoni is currently a local business owner providing government relations services.
Faced with increasing budgetary constraints, school executives are looking to pursue all possible reimbursements for expenses incurred serving their special needs students . Accelify works with school districts and education agencies in California and across the nation to simplify the claiming process and ensure that schools receive their full shares of Medi-Cal reimbursement revenues.
Even though districts are entitled to Medi-Cal reimbursements, this federal program is a widely untapped funding source, with many districts claiming just 1/3 to 1/2 of their available reimbursements. The recently passed national health care legislation is expected to increase the number of Medicaid/Medi-Cal-eligible students by about 27%. This provides districts with an even greater opportunity to increase their federal reimbursement revenue at a time when state and local funding is in crisis.
Accelify is currently working with a number of districts in California including Sweetwater Union High School District, the largest high school district in the country. In the first quarter of effort Accelify increased participation by more than 25% while reducing the district’s personnel workload significantly. Accelify is also working with Green Dot Public Schools in Los Angeles to provide products and services for its Medi-Cal Administrative Activities (MAA) program. In the first quarter of service Accelify was able to ensure more than 90% participation. More recently, Accelify was selected by Travis Unified School District and has increased its MAA participation to 100%.
