Accelify, LLC Welcomes Emi Johnson to Board of Advisors

June 15, 2011

New York, June 15, 2011 – Accelify is pleased to announce that Emi Johnson, former El Dorado Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Director, is the newest member of the company’s Board of Advisors.

“We are thrilled to have Emi Johnson on our Board of Advisors,” said Alex Brecher, CEO of Accelify. “Accelify is working extensively in California, and with our recent acquisition of the SEIS IEP software, we are now in over 850 school districts in the state. Emi is a pioneer in the development of services for special needs students in California’s charter schools, and her expertise will provide valuable insight into the state’s education system, which will help us continue to deliver the very best products and services for our clients.”

Emi comes to Accelify’s board after a successful career directing the El Dorado County SELPA for ten years, and the El Dorado County Charter SELPA for five years. Holding Masters Degrees in Special Education and Educational Administration, Emi was a driving force behind the success of the charter-only SELPA pilot program, which was initiated by the California Department of Education and the State Board of Education.

The California Education Code requires that every local education agency (LEA) or school district belongs to a SELPA.  SELPAs are divided by geographic region and provide services to ensure a full continuum of program options for students with disabilities.  Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, all public schools (including charter schools) must provide services for special education students.  Some charters in California experienced difficulty in securing support from their local SELPAs, and charters authorized by the State Board of Education had no SELPA from which to secure help.

In 2005, a pilot program was created to support charters throughout California that were having trouble getting services and support from their local SELPAs.  Initially the pilot served 10 schools with approximately 2, 000 students.  Under Emi’s guidance, the program grew exponentially, representing 106 schools with over 38,000 students in the 2010-11 school year. In 2012, it is projected to serve 150 Charters from San Diego to Redding, with a total student population of over 53,000 students.

Emi’s leadership in this incredibly successful statewide project has earned her recognition from charter leaders and educators throughout the state, including California Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson.  Instrumental to the success of the statewide program was the utilization of the SEIS IEP software. It allowed Emi and her staff access to any student’s IEP, regardless of where the student was in school.  Emi credits SEIS with helping her ensure IDEA compliance for charter schools, and is delighted to now be involved with Accelify, which recently acquired SEIS and plans to expand the system’s capabilities through integration with software to manage all components of special education and Medi-Cal billing.

Prior to her work with the El Dorado SELPA, Emi served as the District and County Superintendent for Amador County, Director of Special Education, Professional Developer, faculty member of several colleges and universities, and a general education and special education teacher.
