School District 210 to Host College Fair for Special Services Students (IL)

With enrollment in its specialservices programs increasing, Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 istaking new steps to prepare those students for secondary education.

The district said at Thursday’sboard meeting that it will hold its first-ever college fair for specialservices students on Feb. 23 at Lincoln-Way North High School.

Special services students includethose who require tutoring, readers, TDD or interpreters or who are inindividualized education programs (IEPs).

The fair will be "gearedspecifically for students in special services who have IEPs," Lincoln-WayNorth department chair Anne Shanahan said.

Students in District 210 fromeighth-graders through seniors who use special services will be invited toattend.

The program will includeparent-student meetings with university representatives and small groupsessions. Former special services students with college experience also will beavailable to talk with parents and students.

Shanahan believes the specialservices college fair will be the first of its kind in the Southland.

District 210 Supt. Lawrence Wylliesaid the special services enrollment in the district was increasing morerapidly than general enrollment "partially because of the great specialeducation program we have here."

ACT prep classes were offered to specialservices students prior to spring testing this year, and teachers from bothspecial education and regular education classes volunteered their time,Lincoln-Way West department chair Brian Mahoney said.
