Five interns beamed with pride Thursday as they graduated from a unique program designed to help special-needs students transition from school to the workplace.
Called Project SEARCH, the yearlong program, offered by the Berks County Intermediate Unit, provided real-life work experience and helped the interns strengthen their independent living skills.
“So often they are told what they can’t do,” said Tracey G. Miller of BCIU, who served as the interns’ classroom teacher. “Project SEARCH provides them the opportunity to show what they can do.”
This year’s program was hosted by Penn State Health St. Joseph, where the five explored several jobs through a series of three targeted internships each.
